When the National Weather Service issues an excessive heat warning, with high temperatures forecast for multiple days with little overnight cooling, Multnomah County and its partners take steps to plan for cooling spaces or overnight shelters.

In addition, all branches of the Multnomah County Libraries, including the Troutdale Library, are air conditioned and open for at least their usual posted hours. some libraries, often including the Gresham Library, have extended hours and will remain open until later in the evening. The county also provides an interactive cooling spaces map that shows the location of cooling centers, libraries, splash pads, and public pools.

If you head to Glenn Otto Park to cool off in the Sandy River, please remember that despite the hot weather the water can be surprisingly cold and the currents are faster than they appear. Stay safe and wear a life jacket!

The best advice is to drink more water than usual and don’t wait until you’re thirsty to drink, stay out of the sun, and stay in an air-conditioned room if possible. Be sure to check on friends and neighbors and seek medical care immediately if you or someone you know has symptoms of heat-related illness. Never leave people or pets in a hot car.

Below is a list of resources for dealing with extreme heat in our region.
