Update from Mayor Randy Lauer regarding fireworks over the holiday weekend:
Following my statement on Wednesday regarding legal fireworks , I heard from many Troutdale residents concerned about the possible danger posed by legal fireworks. I want to thank everyone for reaching out and sharing their opinions.
As a result of those concerns, I called an emergency meeting of the City Council on Friday, July 2 at 12:00 p.m. After a long and spirited discussion, a majority of the City Council recommended to me that the possible danger posed by the use of legal fireworks did not rise to the level of an emergency situation.
It is still, however, illegal to use any fireworks that fly, explode or travel more than one foot high anywhere in Troutdale. It is also illegal to use fireworks of any kind in any Troutdale City Park. Anyone in Troutdale who uses illegal fireworks, or legal fireworks in City Parks, will be prosecuted to the full extent of the law.
While we are not banning the use of legal fireworks on private property in our City, we strongly encourage citizens to celebrate safely and exercise extreme caution when choosing how to celebrate our country’s independence. There are many ways to celebrate, but please, use your best judgement. The last thing anyone wants is a fire that could have easily been avoided.
If you see anyone lighting illegal fireworks, please call the Sheriff’s non-emergency number at (503) 823-3333. Please refrain from calling 911 unless there is an active fire or other immediate health or safety emergency.
Let’s all have a safe and happy Fourth of July. I truly appreciate your cooperation and understanding.
Be well,
Mayor Randy Lauer
