OVERVIEW
The Troutdale Visitor’s Center provides visitors a location with information on the area's attractions, lodging, dining options, maps, and other information. The Visitor’s Center is often a visitor’s first contact with the community, either in person or through the companion website and electronic communications. It creates a critical first impression of the City and it is important to provide a welcoming, friendly and helpful message.
PURPOSE OF POSITION
The Visitor Center Greeter is a public-facing position that serves as the first point of contact for visitors to the City, with strong customer service skills providing friendly and clear communication.
This position is responsible for the successful daily operations of all aspects of the visitor experience at the info desk, greeting and orienting guests with a focus on providing a quality, memorable guest experience.
The Greeter demonstrates professional, courteous, and respectful behavior toward people from diverse backgrounds, and promotes the City as a friendly and inviting place to visit.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
- Exemplary attendance is a requirement of this position.
- Performs a full range of reception duties in support of the Visitor’s Center including greeting visitors, and answering questions about nearby attractions, including restaurants, parking and lodging. Responds to phone and email inquiries.
- Provides an upbeat and friendly delivery of excellent customer service via face-to-face, phone and email interactions.
- Assists with opening and closing procedures of the visitor center including daily reports and basic cleaning of the Visitor Center portion of the Depot facility.
- Maintains a well-stocked area in the Visitor Center, including all program and event fliers and community brochures.
- Responsible for sanitizing the Visitor’s Center restroom and counter every 30 minutes.
- Maintains a heightened awareness of visitors' needs by helping, advising and providing efficient customer service at all times.
- Actively seek ways to add value to the visitor's experience by focusing on helpful communication and customer care.
- Stays current with the daily schedule of community special events, communicating with other staff and event hosts/leaders of special events as assigned.
- Collects and communicates visitor feedback and follows-up on visitor interactions where appropriate to support the marketing, advertising, publicity and promotion of the City.
- Effectively and clearly communicates to others verbally and in both electronic and physical written form.
- Maintains cooperative working relationships with the Troutdale Historical Society staff and other organizations.
- Greeters are expected to function independently in daily tasks and use sound judgment in troubleshooting and handling visitor concerns and complaints.
- Manages the shift schedule effectively, cooperatively and collectively among the six (6) Greeter staff, ensuring the Visitor’s Center is properly staffed during open hours and during designated special events.
- Maintains adherence to Visitor Center specific policies and procedures.
- Follows all safety rules and procedures established for work areas.
- Must develop and maintain positive working relationships with supervisors, co-workers and customers.
AUXILIARY JOB FUNCTIONS
- May be required to assist in special events support as workload or staffing levels dictate.

QUALIFICATIONS
Knowledge of:
- Customer service practices and methods.
- Computer equipment and software applications.
Skills:
- Basic knowledge of computer applications, including internet, email, MS Word and Excel.
Abilities:
- Effectively meet and deal with the public;
- Engage guests in light, informative conversation;
- Communicate effectively verbally and in writing; including electronic communications; professional verbal and written communication skills; telephone etiquette;
- Demonstrated ability to work independently and experience in dealing with the general public in a courteous, responsible and effective manner
- Flexibility with hours for weekend and special events.
- Physically perform the essential job functions.

- A minimum of a six (6) month commitment to Greeter service of at least two (2) four-hour shifts per week, with Saturdays, Sundays, and Mondays preferred. No more than 20 hours per week.
- Will require schedule flexibility, including weekends, special events and holidays, and will require occasional evenings and outdoor conditions.
- Have internet access to record work hours and communicate through email.
Visitor’s Center Hours are:
- Thursday through Monday 8 am to 5 pm May through September.
- Thursday through Monday 9 am to 3 pm October through April.
- (Closed Tuesday and Wednesday)
WORKING CONDITIONS
- Work is performed in an open office environment
- May require prolonged standing
- Must wear personal protective equipment appropriate to the assignment, such as mask/face shield and gloves
- Will use cleaning solutions
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES
Supervisory responsibilities are not assigned to this position. Position may be responsible to provide training and orientation to fellow Greeters.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED
Works under the general supervision of the Assistant to the City Manager and the Economic Development Coordinator.
EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE
- Education and experience for entry level, administrative support is typically equivalent to completion of high school/GED and up to one year of experience.
- Any combination of education and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities is qualifying. This is an entry level position. Typically, the incumbent has directly related work knowledge, but limited work experience. As experience is gained, incumbents perform the full range of duties assigned with increasing independence.
- Experience with point of sales system operations a plus.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS/LICENSES:
- None.
- Foreign language skills a plus.
