Street Trees

Street trees are trees that are planted inside the planting strip between sidewalks and the street. If you are planning on planting a street tree within Troutdale city limits, be sure to check out our list of recommended street tree species. This list includes the scientific and common names of each species and well as a general description and average heights and canopy spread.

The City also maintains a list of nuisance plants and native trees, shrubs and groundcover.

While the City strongly encourages the use of native plant species, including residential landscaping, very few native tree species exhibit the characteristics desired for installation adjacent to or between curbs and sidewalks. Many of the cultivars listed are based on Oregon native species. However, because they are bred cultivars, they are not true natives. Consult with a nursery for more information.

Please note that a permit is required to plant, remove or prune a street tree. You can apply for street tree permits on the City's Citizen Self Service portal. There is no cost to obtain a street tree permit.

Troutdale’s Municipal Code assigns street tree maintenance responsibility to the abutting property owner and requires that street trees be maintained at a height of 11 feet over the curb and 7-½ feet over the sidewalk. Why these heights? Many tree limbs hang too low over the sidewalk and curb, forcing City and County street sweeper operators to swerve away from curb, leaving debris and pollutants behind in the street gutter. And do consider Troutdale's own Drew Eubanks. We don't want him to force him (or any other NBA centers who may be visiting the Gateway to the Gorge) to duck below any tree limbs while walking down the sidewalk. Please do your part to trim the street trees adjacent to your property to these height requirements.
