Waterline Flushing Program

Collage of three images showing waterline flushing from a hydrant in Troutdale, Oregon

Every year the City of Troutdale Public Works Department flushes the City owned waterlines. Flushing of waterlines removes discoloration from the water due to minerals and sediment that accumulate over time. This program is an integral part of our ongoing effort to deliver the highest quality water possible. Waterline flushing will take place during regular business hours, typically from 9:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. on weekdays.

  • If you see Public Works employees flushing a hydrant on your street, avoid running tap water until the flushing is complete.
  • Since the process removes minerals and sediment, the flushing could cause discolored water in your home.  To purge discolored water, turn on a cold water faucet or two until clear water is observed. If the water does not clear up after ten minutes, wait for 30-minutes before trying the same method again.
  • The discolored water is safe and does not cause health problems.
  • We recommend not using hot water or doing laundry until you see clear water at your home.  The discolored water may stain clothes washed during this time.
  • You may want to remove and rinse the screens in your faucets.  Sediment can become trapped in the screens and should be cleaned out.
