Troutdale, Wood Village and Fairview are working to create a vibrant main street along Halsey Street from Troutdale’s town center to Fairview Parkway.
So what exactly is a “main street”? The key ingredients include having destinations to walk to and where walking is pleasant, comfortable and safe. Thriving Main Streets are places where commerce and community come together — where people can live, work, dine, shop and play. They are also places where buildings and streetscapes define and enclose the street.
A lot goes into creating a vibrant main street. Housing can add to the “sense of place” by bringing people close to businesses and transit. But how should housing be designed and located to create an active main street? The same question is valid for commercial development. Businesses are at the center of what makes a main street a true destination, but some commercial uses and building designs can detract from the pedestrian-friendly environment of a Main Street.
The zoning code can play a big part in how streets like Halsey develop in the future. Changes to zoning code can sometimes elicit a strong reaction, and that’s why we want to hear from you. What should the Halsey Main Street look like? How do you picture people walking, biking, shopping, and visiting along Halsey?
We want to know how you envision Halsey as a main street, as well as your thoughts and concerns. Your feedback will inform potential changes to zoning and design codes that shape what new development looks like. We encourage you to visit mainstreetshalsey.com to take an online survey. First you’ll have the opportunity to watch three one-minute videos that provide a brief overview of the project, followed by the 10-minute survey. At the end of the survey, you’ll get a chance to win a $25 gift card to a local Halsey Street business!
And be sure to keep an eye out for a Virtual Open House in the coming weeks.
