Purpose of Position
Provide for the care and maintenance of City facilities, maintaining excellent sanitary and safe office and public spaces within the City’s facilities. Ensure that assignments are completed in a safe, proper, and timely manner with high regard for integrity and performance, and daily demands. Attention to detail is critical in order for the custodian to fulfill their essential duties properly.

Essential Job Functions
- Keep offices, meeting rooms and building interiors in optimum condition and appearance through cleaning and maintenance to ensure a sanitary, safe, and attractive environment.
- Clean and sanitize restrooms, including toilet, sink, vanity, mirror, and floors, and restock disposables.
- Clean and sanitize lunchrooms/kitchens, including sink, counters, tables, and floors, and restock disposables.
- Sanitize frequently touched surfaces in common areas (doorknobs/bars, hand rails, public service counters, etc.)
- Sweep and mop floors and vacuum carpets and rugs, in both individual work areas and common areas.
- Remove trash and recycling, tidy furniture, and dust surfaces.
- Clean building entrances (floors, glass doors, etc.)
- Coordinate facility requests for services in conjunction with supervisor, prioritizing with daily scheduled work activities.
- Perform other basic building upkeep tasks, including but not limited to, replacing light bulbs, moving furniture, unclogging drains, assembling small furniture, install bulletin boards, white boards, art, etc. on walls as assigned.
- Ensure cleaning supplies, maintenance product inventory, and facility disposable supplies are always stocked adequately at each building.
- Purchase supplies, equipment and materials for assigned duties and special projects.
- Maintain detailed and accurate records to include a log of building maintenance activities, documentation for purchases, and tracking of expenditures.
- Wear required PPE when working with chemicals and other commercial cleaning products prior to cleaning restroom facilities, ensuring that the building, facilities, and public spaces stay healthy and sanitary.
- Safely operate assigned City vehicle, maintaining an acceptable driving record at all times.
- Secure facility at completion of shift, upon exit after operating hours by locking doors, closing windows, and setting alarm systems.
- Strictly adhere to scheduled work hours to ensure that custodial needs are met.
- Notify Superintendent promptly of deficiencies or needs for repairs, and unsafe conditions.
- Follows all health and safety practices, policies and procedures.
- Maintain personal workspace and assigned City vehicle in a clean and orderly manner.
- May be assigned to perform or assist with special projects to maintain or enhance the City's facilities.
- May assist with setting up facilities for meetings or events.
- Must develop and maintain positive and cooperative working relationships with City staff, vendors, citizens, other organizations, and the public, contributing to a positive work environment.
- Support and respect diversity in the workplace.
Auxiliary Job Functions
- Provide input for custodial building maintenance portion of the Facilities Division, including equipment maintenance, tools, and supplies.
- Suggest new methods for carrying out the functions of the position in a cost-effective manner.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
- Provide assistance to other staff as workload and staffing levels dictate.
- Advance and protect the interests of the City and it’s citizens in all matters.

Supervision Received
Receives supervision from and reports directly to the Parks & Facilities Superintendent or their designee.
Qualifications
Knowledge of
- Safety hazards and proper use of various cleaning and sanitizing solutions
- Safe disposal of chemical liquids and other cleaning components
- Safe use of motorized small appliances, such as vacuum cleaners
- Appropriate PPE use
- Familiarity with Material Safety Data Sheets
- Intermediate proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel and Outlook
Ability to
- Utilize a variety of required tools (broom, vacuum carpet shampooer, etc.)
- Interact with staff, vendors, citizens and others while remaining professional, polite, and courteous.
- Work independently & manage assigned task list to completion with little to no supervision
- Maintain a high ethical standard of privacy, respecting employee personal workspaces and the contents of each workspace.
- Work evenings and weekends as scheduled.
- May infrequently be required to work overtime due to unforeseen events, with or without notice.

Education and Experience
- High school diploma or GED preferred.
- Minimum of five (5) years of experience in janitorial and/or custodial type work and facility/office/building routine cleaning and maintenance.
- Experience in inventorying and purchasing products, equipment, tools and supplies necessary to perform the job, including maintaining detailed and accurate records.
- Any combination of education and experience which demonstrate the ability to perform the essential functions of the position.
Special Requirements/Licenses
- Report for duty as required in the event of an emergency to maintain a safe environment and providing appropriate protection for facilities
- Possess a valid Oregon or Washington driver’s license and acceptable driving record, and maintain an acceptable driving record for the duration of employment
- Successfully complete a criminal background check
- Successfully complete a Multnomah County background check for CJIS background clearance
- Successfully pass a pre-placement drug screen
