The Oregon Department of Transportation will soon start replacing the pedestrian walkway surface on the Troutdale Bridge over the Sandy River. The existing walkway is too narrow, is increasingly deteriorated, and is constructed of old materials that are require excessive maintenance effort. The project will increase safety for people walking and biking crossing the bridge and will upgrade the walkway structure to durable, low-maintenance materials.
This work will require closing the bridge to all motor vehicles during construction. The bridge closure will begin on March 16, 2020 and is expected to run until just before Memorial Day. Starting on Monday, March 2 drivers should expect flaggers directing traffic between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. weekdays over the bridge.
Signed detours will direct travelers around the closure. Cyclists and pedestrians will be able to continue using the bridge during construction, but they should be prepared to follow the signed detour route onto the bridge and exercise caution in the work zone.
The main work will involve replacing the wooden walkway on the upstream side of the bridge with plastic lumber and widen it to accommodate people with disabilities. Plastic lumber has a longer lifespan, reduced maintenance needs and similar appearance to wood. The wooden guardrail will also be replaced with a metal guardrail that will resemble the original.
Additional work will include repairs to small sections of the steel bridge, temporary relocation and reinstallation of a small City sewer main that runs below the walkway deck, replacing the lighting on the bridge for increased safety, and making signing and striping changes at the intersection at the northeast end of the bridge.
Most of the work will take place during daytime hours, but some work may take place at night. People working or living in the area may hear the noise. There will be no closures of businesses or recreational access due to this work.
