Purpose of Position

Perform tasks of limited complexity in the operation, maintenance and repair of wastewater treatment facilities, pump stations, collection system and storm drainage system. Learn proper plant operations and maintenance techniques and routine maintenance of plant collection system and related sewer system facilities.

 

Essential Functions

  • Clean process equipment, pumps, STEP systems, collection and storm systems and other equipment and machinery. Read meters and gauges. Perform primarily unskilled tasks such as sample collection and delivery, pickup parts orders, etc. (50%)
  •  Learn and apply inspection techniques to inspect equipment such as pumps, motors, valves, generators, gauges, compressors and other related sewer system equipment and connections for proper operation. Perform minor preventive and corrective maintenance on equipment to ensure efficient, reliable operation. Perform cleaning and maintenance checks on vehicles and equipment. (20%)
  •  Perform routine custodial/maintenance duties to keep buildings, furnishings and grounds clean and in good appearance. Learn to safely perform maintenance as scheduled or necessary. (20%)
  •  Maintain logs and records as required by laws, regulations and procedures regarding wastewater flow and treatment plant and pump station operation and maintenance activities. (10%)
  •  Regularly operate City vehicles and heavy equipment; must posses a valid Oregon or Washington driver’s license and an acceptable driving record at all times.
  •  Maintains safe work habits and contributes to the safety of self, co-workers and the general public.Must maintain consistent and regular job attendance and adherence to working hours,
  • Effectively and clearly communicate to others in-person, verbally, and in both electronic and physical written form.
  • Must develop and maintain positive working relationships with supervisors, co-workers and customers.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Knowledge of:

  • Arithmetic calculations, including decimals and fractions.
  • Tools and equipment used in wastewater collection systems and treatment plant operations.

Ability to:

  • Acquire skills in the maintenance of wastewater treatment plant facilities and equipment, sewage sampling techniques, safety and biohazards associated with sewage treatment, and analytical procedures for wastewater laboratory.

 

Education and Experience

Equivalent to high school education or any satisfactory combination of experience and training which demonstrates the ability to perform the above duties.

 

Special Requirements/Licenses

Possession of a valid Oregon or Washington drivers' license and acceptable driving record. Possession of a valid CDL with tank and air brake endorsements, or ability to obtain within three (3) months. 

 

Physical Demands of Position

Many duties are physically demanding requiring the movement of materials weighing up to 90 pounds. Movement of materials weighing 25 to 50 pounds may consume up to 15% of the work period. Duties require regular use of hand tools, material-moving devices such as shovels, and proficient operation of light equipment and vehicles.

Requires ability to perform the following physical requirements:  Bending, stooping, climbing, crawling, crouching, squatting, handling, grasping or pinching, hearing and listening, kneeling, pull/push, reach overhead, shoveling and digging, sitting, standing, twisting and walking.

Working Conditions

Work is performed in a wide variety of environments including laboratory, treatment plant, confined spaces, in year-round outdoor weather conditions, and may be exposed to fumes, oils, chemicals, raw sewage, etc. Position may be called for emergency response after normal work hours.

All Public Works field employees are considered “essential employees” and may be called back to work before his/her regularly scheduled shift, or after completing his/her shift, to perform work of an emergency nature, as well as be strictly required to report to work in inclement and/or extreme weather conditions.

Supervisory Responsibilities:

Supervision is not a normal function assigned to this position.

Supervision Received:

Works under the general supervision of the Wastewater Services Superintendent. Receives work assignments and direction from the Wastewater Services Chief Operator.
